Paperwork and History: Uncovering the Past

The car’s history is just as important as its current condition.  Always ask to see the car’s title and registration.  Make sure the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on the title matches the VIN on the car.  Check the title for any brands, such as “salvage,” “flood,” or “rebuilt.”  These brands indicate that the car has been severely damaged and may not be safe to drive.  Obtain a vehicle history report from a reputable provider, such as Carfax or AutoCheck.  These reports can reveal accidents, title issues, odometer fraud, and other important information.  Review the car’s maintenance records.  Regular maintenance is a sign that the car has been well cared for.  Look for evidence of oil changes, tune-ups, and other routine services.  If the seller is reluctant to provide this information, it’s a red flag.
