Under the Hood: Listening to the Engine’s Secrets
The engine is the heart of any car, and its condition is a critical indicator of the vehicle’s overall health. Before starting the engine, check the fluid levels. The oil should be clean and at the proper level. Low or dirty oil can indicate neglect or internal engine problems. Check the coolant level and look for signs of leaks or contamination. A milky or oily residue in the coolant can indicate a blown head gasket, a very expensive repair. Start the engine and listen carefully. Does it start easily and idle smoothly? Knocking, ticking, or rattling noises can indicate serious engine problems. Check the exhaust for excessive smoke. Blue smoke indicates burning oil, black smoke indicates a rich fuel mixture, and white smoke can indicate a coolant leak. While the engine is running, check for leaks under the car. Oil, coolant, or transmission fluid leaks are all red flags. Also, pay attention to the smell. A burning smell can indicate an oil leak or electrical problem.
