Common Mistakes to Avoid When Buying a Used Car

3. Focusing Solely on Monthly Payments: Losing Sight of the Big Picture

Dealerships often try to steer buyers towards focusing on the monthly payment rather than the total price of the car.  This tactic can be misleading, as it allows the dealership to hide additional fees and charges in the financing agreement.  By focusing solely on the monthly payment, you may end up paying more for the car than you realize.

Instead of focusing on the monthly payment, focus on the out-the-door price, which includes all taxes, fees, and other charges.  This will give you a clear picture of the total cost of the vehicle.  Also, be sure to shop around for the best financing rates.  Don’t just accept the dealership’s financing offer without comparing it to offers from other lenders, such as banks and credit unions.
